Raksha Bandhan (Janai Purnima) 2080/2023 Wishes & Greetings
“Janai Purnima,” also known as “Rakshya Bandhan” or “Rishi Purnima,” is a significant festival celebrated by Hindus in Nepal. It falls on the full moon day in the month of Shrawan (July-August) according to the lunar calendar. The festival holds both religious and cultural importance.
During Janai Purnima, Hindu men of the Brahmin and Chhetri communities perform a sacred thread-changing ceremony known as “Bratabandha” or “Janai ceremony.” This ceremony involves changing a sacred thread, called “Janai” or “Janeu,” worn diagonally from the left shoulder to the right hip. The thread symbolizes their connection to spirituality and their commitment to following their dharma (moral and social duties).
The festival is not limited to men, though. On this day, people of all ages, including women and children, tie colorful threads around their wrists, similar to the Rakhi thread, as a symbol of protection and blessings. This is why the festival is also referred to as “Rakshya Bandhan,” which means “bond of protection.”
Another significant aspect of Janai Purnima is taking a holy bath in sacred rivers, lakes, or ponds. Devotees believe that taking a dip in these waters will cleanse them of their sins and purify their souls.
In addition to the religious ceremonies, Janai Purnima is also a time for family gatherings, feasting, and celebrating the cultural heritage of Nepal. It is an occasion for people to come together, strengthen their familial bonds, and enjoy traditional foods and sweets.
