Teej is one of the most celebrated festivals in Nepal, especially by Hindu women. It falls on the third day of the bright half of the lunar month of Bhadra (August/September) and lasts for three days. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, who is revered as the ideal wife and is worshipped for marital bliss, well-being, and the long life of husbands.
During Teej, married and unmarried women dress up in red and green traditional attire, wear beautiful bangles, and adorn themselves with jewelry. They gather at temples or in their homes to perform puja (worship) and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati. The main puja takes place on the second day of Teej, where women fast for the whole day without consuming food or water. The fasting is observed to seek the blessings of the goddess for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.
Women engage in various cultural activities during Teej. They sing traditional folk songs called “teej geet” that depict their longing for marital bliss and the joy of the festival. They also participate in dances, especially the famous “teej dance,” where women form a circle and move rhythmically to the beat of traditional musical instruments.
Apart from the religious aspect, Teej is also a time for women to enjoy and celebrate their womanhood. They indulge in feasting and delicious traditional food, particularly sweets like sel roti and ghevar. The festival brings women together, strengthening their bonds and providing an opportunity for socializing and sharing experiences.
