According to Nepali Calendar Gyalpo Losar 2076 is on : 24 February, 2020 ( 12 Falgun, 2076)
What does Losar mean?
The word Losar is made from two words Lo, meaning year and Sar, the word for new.
Mostly Losar is celebrated by the Sherpa, Tibetan, Tamang, Bhutia and Yolmo people in Nepal. Gyalpo Losar, especially, is the celebration of the Tibetan new year.
The Tibetan calendar is made up of twelve lunar months and Losar starts on the first day of the first month. The celebrations of Lhosar begins on the 29th day of the 12th month of the calendar.
How is Gyalpo Losar celebrated?
For almost two weeks Tibetan people celebrate Gyalpo Losar. But the first three days are the important days and in the first three days of Gyalpo Losar the main celebrations take place.
First Day: Beverage named changkol is made from chhaang (a Tibetan cousin of beer).
Second Day: This is the main New Year Day and this day is called Gyalpo Losar.
Third Day: On the third day people get together and have feasts.
Gyalpo Losar is celebrated by Sherpas communities in Nepal. The main attraction of this Gyalpo Losar is they wear their traditional dresses and perform their singing and dancing of their culture. Greetings are shared on each other, eat and drink their cultural dishes and drinks and make spiritual performance.
People visit the nearby monasteries, chhortens and Stupas. Some ceremonial dances represent the tussle between Gods and Demons based on the Tibetan Lunar calendar.
